Classified Employees After Hours Series: Current State

Welcome the Classified Employees After Hours Series. The recent developments in the Chancellor Search have put MCCCD in the national spotlight for the wrong reasons, again. The details of the investigation report showed gross misconduct of Governing Board member Kathleen Winn. She pushed forward her own candidate to be interviewed through the search firm, ignoring the search committees. She improperly attempted to eliminate one candidate from the search by speaking directly with the candidate to attempt to persuade the person not to apply for the Chancellor position. Winn spoke directly with a community member to discuss why she would not support this candidate and why she would support another candidate. Winn also had discussions with multiple people outside the search committee about candidates which violates the Confidentiality Agreement she signed along with basic ethics of a hiring search.

Classified Employees have all too often been left out and not prioritized in conversations that directly affect their day by day functions and our livelihood. The Chancellor, District Leadership, College Presidents and the Governing Board have continued to support processes and policies that silence the voice of Classified Employees and allow for employee groups to become stagnate or dispensed. It is our time to take action and to stop being an afterthought when leadership is making decisions. Classified Employees must come together, after hours, and start talking in order to empower one another and start making a difference. How do we organize to have a stronger voice? How does our voice start to equal to that of the faculty representation? (Faculty supports our voice and wants to help us strengthen it).
